Job Vacancy: Part Time Library Assistant

Summary: The Parsippany Library is seeking a Part Time Library Assistant to join the
Customer Service Department at the Lake Hiawatha Branch. This position provides customer
service to patrons while supporting the operations of the library system.

About the Library: The Parsippany Library serves a population of 56,000 with a Main Library
and two branches. Located in Morris County, NJ, Parsippany is a vibrant and diverse
community which has often been recognized as one of the best places to live in the U.S.

Title: Library Assistant

Location: 68 Nokomis Avenue, Lake Hiawatha, NJ 07034, but may be scheduled at any
Parsippany Library location based on the needs of the Library.

Department: Customer Service

Supervisor: Head of Customer Service

Compensation: $17.00/hour and includes paid sick, vacation, and holidays, and enrollment in
the Defined Contribution Retirement Program (DCRP) if eligible.

Schedule: To be determined, up to 28 hours per week. Includes at least one evening per week
and alternating Saturdays.

Library Assistant Job Description
Job Duties:
– Greet patrons and visitors in a friendly and courteous manner.
– Check in/out Library materials, and place holds on materials as requested.
– Answer the front desk phone, and provide assistance or transfer calls as directed.
– Assist patrons with signing up for and renewing library cards, and entering Patron
information into database.
– Prepare library materials for holds and transfers between branches and other libraries.
– Deliver books to patrons through curbside pickup, in all weather types.
– Collect and safeguard money from book purchases.
– Return materials to shelves, and check that materials are in the correct location
– Empty the outdoor book drop.
– Follow opening and closing procedures.
– Enforce Library rules of conduct and policies with patrons.
– Effectively work as a member of the Customer Service team to complete assignments,
plan and decorate for events, and keep the front desk running smoothly.
– Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
– Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to
perform the duties of this position.
– Punctual, dependable, and well organized.
– Exhibit excellent customer service.
– Ability to alphabetize beyond the first letter of a word or initial digit of a sequence of
figures.
– Comfortable with computers, including library software, and timekeeping systems;
experience with MAIN a plus.
– Ability to take direction and follow instructions, given verbally and in writing.
– Able to sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach, grab, climb, carry, push, and pull. Ability to lift and
carry up to 25 pounds, and the ability to push/pull carts and bins up to 100 pounds.
– New Jersey residency requirement: “New Jersey First Act”, N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011,
Chapter 70).

Job Qualifications:
– High School diploma or equivalent.
– 1 year of Customer service experience.
