Head of Adult Services

Position Description
The Head of Adult Services is responsible for overseeing the collection, services and programs offered to teens and
adults. Specific functions include information/reference services, readers advisory services, collection development,
community outreach and programs of interest to teens/adults.
The Head of Adult Services is directly responsible to and reports to the Library Director and serves on the Library’s
Management Team with the Library Director and four others. In this capacity participates in the general planning of
library goals and objectives, services, programs and procedures.

General Responsibilities

● Works to provide appropriate resources for the public to satisfy the informational, resources for education,
enrichment, enlightenment and enjoyment.
● Assesses the community routinely to identify needs, tastes and resources
● Consults with peer, local and regional librarians to ensure administration of quality services
● Responds to patrons in a consistent, friendly and professional manner
● Resolves patrons complaints in a pleasant, timely and professional manner
● Prepares reports and collects data on library and reading programs etc.,
● Supports and implements established Library policy
● Relays departmental needs and concerns to Director
● Staffs the Information Desk as assigned/needed
● Answers reference questions, assists readers in locating materials, provides instruction in use of library
catalog, equipment, databases and digital products
● Promotes the use of library materials, products and programs
● Maintains expertise in Reader’s Advisory and aides readers in material selection

Human Resource Responsibilities

● Supervises staff as assigned and ensures all aspects of library/closing procedures are met
● Ensures quality customer service are being met
● Evaluates department staff performances and reports to and makes recommendations to the Library
Director.

Collection Responsibilities

● Provides a quality collection of print and non-print material to meet the needs of the adult and young adult
population for assigned collection(s)
● Coordinates all aspects of collection development and management for assigned collection (s) including
ordering, weeding, evaluating the condition of the books.
● To use MAIN reports maintain assigned collections (s) and meet patron needs
● Focuses upon increasing circulation and use of library materials and offerings

Community Relations Responsibilities

● Advocates for the Library’s vision
● Networks and reaches out to the community
● Keeps current by engaging with peers and attending appropriate meetings
● Communicates with community entities and peers to build partnerships and relationships
● Cooperates with community organizations and their use of the library

Marketing Responsibilities

● Keeps patrons up-to-date on adult programs and library offerings
● Networks and reaches out to the community, and responds to community requests
● Uses social media to highlight the library, adult literacy programs and book clubs
● Uses the programming registration software
● Creates displays and brochures to highlight material and programs
● Participates in community events to promote the library
● Seasonal Newsletter

Requirements:

● Excellent computer skills and familiarity with software, such as (G-Suite, Chrome, Canva)
● Experience with Koha, WordPress and Jersey Cat are a plus
● Fluency in social media and marketing

All other duties as required. The job description may be modified as necessary.
Thirty-five hours per week including days, nights and weekends.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in library or information science from a library school accredited by the American Library
Association. Possession of a professional librarian’s certificate issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
At least three years successful professional library experience, preferably with some management and supervisory
responsibilities.

Salary: $62,000-$64,000 This is a full-time position with benefits.
If hired, the applicant must be in compliance with the residency requirements of the New Jersey First Act within one
year of the date of hire and must participate in the PERS retirement system.
