Substitute Librarian
Long Hill Township Library

Long Hill Township Library is looking for a friendly service-oriented librarian to work as needed, helping
out in our bustling fun library. The Substitute Librarian will work at either the children or adult reference
desks and help with various library tasks in either department.

Essential Functions of the Job
● Answer Reference and Reader’s Advisory questions in person, via phone & email
● Check out items and answer phones when front desk staff needs assistance
● Assist library patrons with catalog searching and printing and copying
● Provide assistance on usage of library digital platforms, including Libby, Hoopla and Kanopy
● Oversee ongoing programs with room prep including moving chairs and tables and setting up links to
the A/V system
● Assist occasionally with displays, program publicity and collection management projects

Requirements
● An ALA accredited degree (MLIS, MLS, MI)
● Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
● Excellent customer service skills, ability and desire to work with the public
● Good computer skills with an ability to teach others how to use applications and platforms
● Knowledge of trending books and media and a desire to share this information with others
● Ability to work Reference desk shifts independently, sometimes as the person in charge.
● Must be able to work Saturdays, Sundays, weekdays and evenings on an on-demand basis
● Must be able to push, pull, move, reach high and low and lift a minimum of 15 lbs of material

Hours and Compensation
You must have a flexible schedule and be able to work nights, weekends and library holidays on an
on-demand basis. Pay range begins at $30/hour with degree, depending on experience. Open to
students working towards MLS/MLIS degree with 20+ credits at a lower rate (to be increased upon
degree completion). Sunday rate is time and one half.
