Senior Library Assistant (Technology) (Part Time) (2 positions available) – Roxbury Library

Rate: $15.96/hour
15-17 hours a week

Position #1 MUST work:

Tuesdays 5-8pm
Wednesdays 9:30-2pm
One Sunday a month 1:30-5pm
Remaining hours can be arranged with the library director.

Position #2 MUST work:

Thursdays 9:30-4pm
One Sunday a month 1:30-5pm
Remaining hours can be arranged with the library director.

Performs various tasks and assignments requiring a general knowledge of standard library and information resources as well as specialized knowledge of his or her duties. Assignments are controlled in terms of complexity. Regular evening and weekend hours are required.

Functions under the supervision of the Supervising Librarian of Adult Services. Assignments are specified and controlled in terms of responsibility; routine tasks are dealt with independently.

1. Maintains and troubleshoots library computers and electronic equipment, e.g. print management system.
2. May plan and develop adult programs to be held within the library.
3. Answers routine information inquiries from patrons both over the telephone and within the library.
4. Provides instruction to patrons and staff in the use of technological resources and reference tools such as databases and other electronic resources; describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files and shelf collections to obtain materials.
5. May select library materials for purchase, taking into consideration priority needs and budget limitations.
6. Communicates complaints and compliments to Departmental Supervisor.
7. Serves as backup coverage for Circulation and Youth Services desks as needed.
8. Assists in the Interlibrary Loan office as needed.
9. Works recurring weekend shifts.
10. Responsible for weeding assigned sections of the adult book collection.
11. Prepares reports as required.
12. Attends seminars and meetings of professional and technical groups or organizations for the purpose of keeping current with developments in the library field, and specifically with issues concerning the M.A.I.N consortium and its technological needs, requirements, and resources.
13. Schedules meeting room use and maintains public calendar of events.
14. Teaches and develops course curricula for public computer classes.
15. Maintains library web site, and writes content for newsletter and social media.
16. As necessary or as assigned, opens building at the start of the business day and closes the building at the end of the day.
17. Performs related duties as assigned or as needed.

2. Technical skill to install, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot computer hardware and software, including adjusting and configuring system files when necessary.

3. Knowledge of clerical methods and practices.

4. Excellent computer skills; familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software, experience troubleshooting PCs and other devices in a networked environment.

5. A high school diploma or its equivalent.

6. A minimum of two years’ library experience which has demonstrated a practical knowledge of library functions, services, terminologies, techniques, procedures, and standard tools, with emphasis on background relevant to their department or other experience relevant to their specific job description; relevant education or experience may be substituted for library experience at the discretion of the Library Director.

7. Must pass a background check.
