Job Vacancy: Part Time Library Assistant
Summary: The Parsippany Library is seeking a Part Time Library Assistant to join the
Customer Service Department at the Lake Hiawatha Branch Library. This position will be
customer-facing, and duties include, but are not limited to: checking in and out materials,
emptying the book drop, returning materials to the correct location, and answering patron
questions in person and over the phone.
About the Library: The Parsippany Library serves a population of 56,000 with a Main Library
and two branches. Located in Morris County, NJ, Parsippany is a vibrant and diverse
community which has often been recognized as one of the best places to live in the U.S.

Supervisor: Head of Customer Service
Compensation: $17.00/hour and includes paid sick, vacation, and holidays, and enrollment in
the Defined Contribution Retirement Program (DCRP) if eligible.
Schedule: Up to 28 hours per week, to include evening shifts and alternating Saturday shifts.

Library Assistant Job Description
Job Duties:
– Greet patrons and visitors in a friendly and courteous manner
– Check in/out Library materials, and place holds as requested
– Answer patron questions, and direct to appropriate department or location as needed
– Complete the above listed job duties in person and over the phone
– Assist patrons with signing up for and renewing library cards
– Prepare library materials for holds and transfers between branches and other libraries
– Deliver books to patrons through curbside pickup, in all weather types
– Collect and safeguard money from book purchases
– Return materials to shelves, and check that all materials are in the correct location
– Empty the outdoor book drop
– Follow opening and closing procedures as assigned
– Enforce Library rules of conduct and policies with patrons
– Effectively work as a member of the Customer Service team to complete assignments,
plan and decorate for events, and keep the front desk running smoothly
– Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
– Punctual, dependable, and well organized
– Exhibit excellent customer service
– Ability to alphabetize beyond the first letter of a word or initial digit of a sequence of
figures.
– Comfortable with computers, including library software, and timekeeping systems;
experience with MAIN a plus
– Ability to take direction and follow instructions, given verbally and in writing
– Able to sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach, grab, climb, push, and pull. Ability to lift and carry
up to 25 pounds, and the ability to push/pull carts and bins up to 100 pounds.
– New Jersey residency requirement: “New Jersey First Act”, N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).
– Ability to communicate effectively with library staff and patrons
Job Qualifications:
– High School diploma or equivalent
– 1-2 years of Customer service experience
