Library Director – Belmar Public Library


The Board of Trustees of the Belmar Public Library (NJ) seeks an innovative and enthusiastic leader to help create a new vision for the library in a rapidly changing environment.

Responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for the overall management and direction of the Library including the annual operating budget, personnel, facility, programs and services, and planning. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Library Director supervises and evaluates the work of the library staff, provides professional advice to the Library Board, prepares and monitors the Library’s operational and capital budgets on a monthly and annual basis, proposes and implements personnel and operating policies under the Board’s direction, attends monthly Borough Council meetings when appropriate, and networks and builds partnerships with local groups and organizations in order to foster relationships that benefit both the Library and the community. The Belmar Public Library: The BPL serves a population of approximately 5,700 year-round residents and thousands of seasonal visitors. There are 9 (2 full time and 7 part time) dedicated employees. The library owns 11,894 total print and non-print items (as well as some books that are leased) and circulated 13,010 items in 2018. The 3,320 sf building is one of the original 36 Carnegie libraries built in NJ.

The Belmar Borough Community: Belmar Borough, located in southern Monmouth County New Jersey is a quiet and inviting family friendly shore community with a beautiful beach and a boardwalk that attracts thousands of visitors during the summer months. It boasts a bustling Main St. with shops, restaurants, cafes and a N.J. Transit Train Station. Located close to both New York and Philadelphia, Belmar offers residents small-town appeal and easy access to the entertainment and cultural offerings of a major city.

Qualifications: An ALA-accredited Master’s Degree, a New Jersey librarian certificate issued by Thomas Edison State University (or eligibility for immediately acquiring a certificate), and a minimum of eight (8) years of professional library experience with at least three (3) years in a significant supervisory capacity. Preference will be given to candidates with either Director or Assistant Director experience.

In addition to fulfilling the major responsibilities and qualifications of this position, the successful candidate will also possess the ability to read, write, speak and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position; have demonstrated, hands-on knowledge of current and new technologies affecting today’s public libraries; and demonstrate a strong commitment to securing the role of the library as a major cultural, intellectual, and social heart of Belmar Borough.

Other Important Information: Finalists for the position will be asked to provide contact information of three (3) quality job references that must include a current or former board member or supervisor. New Jersey residency is required within one year of the date of hire. Successful completion of a criminal background check is also required.

Compensation: The salary for this position is $75,000 plus a comprehensive employee benefits package administered through the Borough of Belmar. Health coverage is subject to a NJ State mandated employee contribution and membership in the New Jersey Public Employee Retirement System is mandatory.
