Library Assistant – Parsippany Library

Summary:

The Parsippany Library is seeking a Library Assistant to join the Customer Service
Department at the Main Library and the Lake Hiawatha Branch. Duties include customer
service, charging and discharging library materials, issuing library cards, emptying book
drops, answering the customer service phone, delivering books to patrons for curbside
pickup, collecting and safeguarding money collected during Friends of the Library sales,

Job Description:

Position Title – Part Time Library Assistant

Location – Main Library, 449 Halsey Road, Parsippany, NJ 07054, and Lake Hiawatha Branch,
68 Nokomis Ave, Lake Hiawatha, NJ 07034

Department – Customer Service

Salary – $15.30/hour

Benefits – Eligible for sick, vacation, and holiday pay in accordance with the Library’s policies,
and enrollment in the Defined Contribution Retirement Program (DCRP) if eligible

Schedule – Main Library: Schedule 1: Tuesday-Wednesday 4-9pm, Thursday 9-2pm, every
other Saturday 9-5pm. Schedule 2: Monday-Thursday 10-3pm, every other Friday 12-5pm and
Saturday 9-5pm. Lake Hiawatha: Monday evenings, and every other Saturday.

Job Duties:

    • Greet patrons and visitors in a friendly and courteous manner
    • Collect and safeguard money from book purchases
    • Check in/out Library materials, and place holds as requested
    • Deliver books to patrons through curbside pick up
    • Answer patron questions in person and over the phone, and direct to other departments
      as needed
    • Return materials to shelves, and check that all materials are in the correct location
    • Empty the outdoor book drop
    • Exhibit excellent customer service
    • Enforce Library rules of conduct and policies with Patrons
    • Experience with MAIN a plus
    • Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications:

    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • 1-2 years of Customer service experience
    • Ability to alphabetize beyond the first letter of a word
    • Ability to communicate effectively with library staff and patrons
    • Ability to work within a team

Position Requirements:

    • New Jersey residency requirement: “New Jersey First Act”, N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011,
      Chapter 70).
    • Able to sit, stand, bend, kneel, climb, push, and pull. Ability to lift up and carry to 25
      pounds, and the ability to push/pull carts and bins up to 100 pounds.
