Librarian – Children’s Services (Full-time)

Bernards Township Library in Basking Ridge, NJ, seeks a motivated, creative and public service-oriented librarian as a full-time (35 hours per week, including one evening, and one Saturday and Sunday per month) Librarian or Senior Librarian (depending on experience).

The Library is a vibrant and active cultural center in an increasingly diverse community and is much valued by Township residents for its wide range of materials and services. Bernards Township Library is a member of MAIN, Inc., a consortium of 38 libraries, using a shared Polaris ILS with Leap.

In addition to the Supervising Librarian, the children’s staff consists of a full-time Librarian or Senior Librarian (this position) and part-time employees as follows: two Senior Library Assistants who run a number of the children’s and tween’s programs, five Library Assistants, four shelvers, and an on-call assistant. The successful candidate will join a well-established staff with a culture of excellence in public service.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Under the direction of the Supervising Librarian – Children’s Services, the successful candidate will perform professional duties in the Children’s Library such as collection development, reader’s advisory, programming, circulation and reference for children birth through grade 6. She or he will assist in the planning and implementation of programs for children and tweens, reading clubs, and the promotion of multifaceted literacy. In the absence of the Supervising Librarian, supervises the Children’s Library staff and volunteers.

This position requires an ALA accredited MLS/MLIS and a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate. At least one year of successful professional experience working with children, tweens or teens in a public or school library setting is desirable. Continuing education in youth services and related technology desirable. Complete ease in the use of computers is essential. Fluency in languages in addition to English is a plus.
